Cold-weather hiking is rewarding, but dressing for it is a balancing act. Too few layers and you freeze when you stop. Too many and you sweat, which cools you dangerously once you pause.
Start a little cool. If you are perfectly warm at the trailhead, you will overheat within ten minutes. Open vents, remove a layer or push back your hood as soon as you feel warm.
Carry an insulated jacket in your pack to put on during breaks. It is easy to chill quickly when you stop, so pulling on extra warmth before you feel cold is a good habit.
Pack extra layers, snacks, water and a way to stay dry. Careful preparation turns a cold day outside into a pleasure.
